HELIOFRANCE self-draining solar water heater
The advantages of the Heliofrance self-draining solar water heater
- Like all self-draining solar water heaters, the main advantage of this system is to prevent the heat transfer fluid from overheating in the collectors during the summer.
- The self-draining water system is the simplest available. The tank is delivered pre-assembled with a controller and a circulator; installation simply requires connecting the collectors to the tank with a 10/12 twin-pipe copper solar connection.
- It's an environmentally friendly solution, without the use of glycol and easy to maintain.
- The balloon is made of polypropylene, making it corrosion-resistant and featuring reinforced insulation - 30-year guarantee
- It's a low-tech system, easily repairable.
The limitations of the Heliofrance self-draining solar water heater
The main risk with a drainable solar water heater is the freezing of the collector(s). To limit this risk, several rules must be followed:
- The inclination must be at least 17° (30.6%) for an installation with 1 sensor and 25° (46.6%) for an installation with 2 sensors.
- The sensors must be installed perfectly level.
- The solar connection that links the bottom of the collectors to the top of the tank must have a continuous slope of at least 5% without any counter-slope.
If these rules are difficult to follow, it is better to opt for a self-draining glycol-based solar system or a pressurized solar system.
The Heliofrance self-draining solar kit consists of:
- 1 x 300L tank equipped with a domestic hot water exchanger
- 1. Electrical resistance and/or an auxiliary hydraulic heat exchanger
- 1 or 2 solar thermal collectors (hot water) with accessories for roof or frame mounting
- Pre-assembled and pre-wired control elements necessary for the operation and optimization of solar hot water production.
Start saving energy now with your individual solar water heater (CESI), by taking advantage of a renewable heat source.
Operating principle
The water stored in the tank remains constant. It is used for heat storage and is referred to as "dead water." Annual (or even biannual) top-ups of water constitute the bulk of the system's maintenance.
When hot water is drawn, the cold water entering the tank passes through an exchanger immersed in the hot storage water, it is heated and sent to the point of draw-off.
The volume of domestic hot water stored (only that present in the exchanger) is therefore very small and its quality is not degraded as it could be after too long a storage period.
The tank starts charging with solar calories when the temperature probe located on the sensors indicates a sufficient temperature that is higher than the temperature of the storage water at the bottom of the tank.
The circulator starts up and sends the water from the storage tank into the sensors and the water heats up.
When the tank temperature reaches its maximum value or when it becomes higher than the temperature of the sensors, the pump stops and the stored water flows back down into the tank by gravity.
Thus, when the tank is sufficiently hot, or when the sensors are colder than the tank, or when there is frost or a power outage, the circulator does not operate, the sensors are empty of water, and the system is secure.
The 300L tank volume, which includes a reserve of approximately 200L of water heated by the hydraulic or electric backup when necessary, is well suited to a family of 4 to 5 people.
The collector surface area of 2.7 m² to 5.2 m² allows for covering 40 to 60% of the household's domestic hot water needs, depending on:
- of the consumption profile,
- orientation,
- the tilt of the panels
- of the geographical area,
- sun masksentuels

Installation of the Heliofrance self-draining solar kit:
The ball:
The tank is compact (67cm wide x 55cm deep x 180cm high). Connections are made on the top of the tank, which is the most practical installation format. This requires planning ahead for the tank's location to allow for top-mounted hydraulic connections, while ensuring that the solar connection linking the collectors to the tank maintains a minimum 4% slope without creating a back slope.
The tank is delivered pre-equipped and ready to connect.
The sensors:
They are specific to self-draining systems because they allow all the water to drain by gravity. They are supplied with mounting accessories for roof mounting or for use with a 45° frame. They are also referred to as panels.
The solar connection:
The solar connection is supplied as an option with the kit. Indeed, site coordination often requires that the solar connection be installed before the tank and collector(s) are fitted. This solar connection must consist of two insulated copper or stainless steel pipes with a diameter of 12 mm, installed with a minimum slope of 4%. Avoid any negative slope to ensure that the water drains from the collectors by gravity.
The maximum recommended cable length is 15 m to match the circulator's power (for any other configuration, please contact us). It is advisable to run the probe's electrical cable and the ground wire with the solar connection. Similarly, it is preferable to use copper busbar or, failing that, a straight support if using copper.annealed or corrugated stainless steel.
