Description of the Canadian Air Well LEWT by HELIOS:
Principle of operation:
The Canadian (or Provençal) well uses the particularity of the subsoil according to which the temperature from a certain depth remains almost constant all year round.
The outside air brought into the building passes through a collector buried in the ground at a depth greater than 1m20.
The results obtained using the LEWT Canadian well:
- In the cold season , preheating of fresh outside air .
In the case of a connection with a double flow VMC, the outside air will arrive in the exchanger with a temperature higher than 0°C, the risk of icing of the exchanger is practically nil.
This results in a better efficiency of the exchanger and a higher blowing temperature. The heating of fresh air is limited to periods of very low temperatures.
- In the hot season , the Canadian air well refreshes the outside air , thus creating a feeling of freshness in the rooms.
- In intermediate periods, the fresh air supply passes either through the buried collector or through the direct air intake, depending on the outside temperature.
The control is automatic by thermostat or manual. The motorized bypass damper automatically controls the air supply.
The temperature of the air arriving in the double flow unit is thus optimized to allow high energy efficiency and guarantee comfort and well-being in the premises.
Additional technical information:
- In order to obtain good thermal efficiency, the collector must be buried at least 1.2m deep. At this depth, the temperature of the subsoil oscillates around 8 to 12°C in general.
To benefit from a higher basement temperature and have less oscillation, the collector must be buried deeper.
- When burying, respect a slope for the evacuation of condensates of at least 2%.
- To promote heat exchange, the speed of passage in the tube must not exceed 2.5 m/s. Respect a minimum distance of 80 cm between collectors if the network is divided into parallel sections.
- In order to reduce pressure losses, it is recommended to have a radius of curvature of at least 1m.

Options Details
In a configuration with a basement, provide a slope of 2% of the buried duct and make the connection of a double tee with joint with inspection hatch and condensate recovery.
In a configuration without a basement, provide a 2% slope from the buried duct towards the external manhole and make the connection of a double tee with joint inside this manhole with inspection hatch and condensate recovery.
The kit consists of:
- 1 Double tee with joint for configuration with basement (Ref 2967)
- 2 Connecting sleeves with joints DN200 (Ref 2971)
In a configuration without a basement, provide a watertight condensate collection manhole with a lift pump. The geothermal collector will have a slope of 2% towards the manhole.
.The kit consists of:
- Watertight manhole base (Ref 83919)
- 2 m of corrugated tube DN300 for watertight manhole (Ref 83643)
- 1 lip seal DN300 for watertight manhole (Ref 83587)
- 1 lip seal DN200 (Ref 93955)
- 1 Galvanised tee with cleaning trap (Ref 83368)
- 1 condensate pump 230 V (Ref 83540)
The manual bypass consists of:
- 2 circular isolation valves DN200 (Ref 11055213)
- 1 Galvanised tee DN 200 (Ref 11098008)
- 5 FF sleeves DN 200 (Ref 11093066)
Automatic bypass allows for automatic control of fresh air intake through the geothermal or direct exchanger based on the outdoor temperature measured by the thermostat.
- Temperature range for air intake adjustable on the thermostat.
- Manual selection of the operating mode possible
The kit consists of:
- Bypass register DN200 with 230V actuator to be mounted vertically between the double flow unit and the double tee.
- Thermostat for manual or automatic control of the bypass damper (dim. L200xH90xD70 mm). To be fixed outside the building facing north, 1m above the ground and protected from the weather.
- Control box (dim. L110xH180xD100 mm) for the modes of operation: automatic by thermostat, manual through the exchanger, manual direct.
